Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 4:17-5:1-2

  1. The Context: the Arrival of the Kingdom

“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?” (2:2).

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (4:17).


  1. The Message: the Life-style of His Disciples

“Now when he saw the crowds, he went on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him.”

“Go and make disciples of all nations, … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (28:19-20). (See 5-7, 10, 13, 18, 24-25.)

“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority….” (7:28-29).


  1. The Relevance: Counter Culture

“You have heard that….but I tell you….”

“What are you doing more than others?” (5:47)

“Do not be like them.” (6:8)
